TYPE OF INJURY: Ankle sprains and/or strains, stretching all or part of the ligaments (which connect the bones) or tendons (which connect the muscles to the bones). An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle over-extend or tear, due to internal and external factors.  

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS: Pain, swelling or inflammation classified according to 3 degrees based on the extent of damage to the ligaments: Mild with slight pain and inability to move and slight soreness and swelling; Moderate with a tearing or popping sensation, medium pain, difficulty in moving, swelling and discolouration of the affected part; Severe with severe pain, swelling and discolouration of the affected part, inability to bear weight and move the ankle.
